I, like most all of you, saw my first indie improv show at Under St. Marks. I still remember how thrilling it was to actually perform there for the first time. It felt like a rite of passage.

The charming little black-box theater is in danger of closing because the building it’s in is being sold. However, Horse Trade (who run USM) have a plan to save the space, but they need financial support.

If you’ve ever been to—or in—a show at Under St. Marks, you know it’s an important place. Not just for improv students looking for stage time, but for theater and comedy in general.

Give what you can.

A no-brainer.

Been thinking about this all night. You know what? Don’t just donate. Sure, donate, but do more.

You know all those people who have asked what exactly it is you do with your free time? Send them this, tell them how important it is to you, and ask them to donate.

You know all those family members who have wanted to come see you “do comedy”, but you’ve found excuses for them not to, because even if it wasn’t too dirty for them they wouldn’t get it anyway? Send them this, tell them this place is part of what keeps that comedy going, and if they donate you just might consider letting them come.

You know that co-worker who has fairly good taste in TV comedy, so you’ve asked him to come to your shows consistently for the past two and a half years, but they never have? Send them this, and tell them if they donate you’ll never ask again.

There are few places more important to the New York improv world than Under St. Marks. We need it. And right now, it needs us. Don’t let it down.
